Seasick Steve

Nieuwjaar 2007. Jools Holland voert een merkwaardige man op in zijn jaarlijkse feestshow 'Hootenanny' op de BBC. Hij draagt een blauwe overall, hij heeft een lange grijze baard en hij heet Seasick Steve. Met een houten kistje (Mississippi Drum Machine) en een driesnarige gitaar (Three-String Trance Wonder) ontketent hij een kleine revolutie. Hij doet voor de blues wat de Buena Vista Social Club voor Cubaanse muziek heeft gedaan. Steve Wold zit op dat moment al een halve eeuw in het vak. Het merendeel van die tijd is hij een rondzwervende muzikant. Hij verhuist liefst 55 keer in 25 jaar met zijn Noorse echtgenote en hun vijf kinderen. Een hartaanval leidt hem naar een vaste stek in Noorwegen. Hij is 63 als hij zijn eerste album opneemt. Hij is 68 als hij zijn eerste Werchter speelt en de 17-jarige Lisa Breugelmans op het podium roept. Hij wordt de eerste 70+-er in de geschiedenis van het festival. Zijn nieuwe album heet treffend 'You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks' en verschijnt in de Verenigde Staten op Third Man Records, het label van Jack White. (Rock Werchter 2011)
