Aloe Blacc

'I Need A Dollar' van Aloe Blacc was een van de oorwurmen van 2010. Een goed-gevoel-nummer dat bijna zes maanden in de Ultratop logeerde. Dat zal dan wel overal zo in de wereld zo geweest zijn zeker, denk je dan. Niets blijkt minder waar. Alleen in Oostenrijk en Zwitserland haalde de geboren hit ook de top 5. 'Good Things' (2010) bevestigt dat de smaak der Belgen goed is afgesteld. Het tweede album van Nathaniel Dawkins laat een straffe soulartiest horen die warme herinneringen oproept aan Al Green, Bill Withers en Isaac Hayes. De manier waarop hij 'Femme Fatale' van The Velvet Underground ombouwt tot een diepdroevig liefdeslied, zegt alles over zijn grote kunnen. Een gedroomde kameraad voor Cee-Lo Green. Nog heel straf is dat Blacc een uitstekend trompettist en rapper is. Hij zit onder dak bij het gerespecteerde hiphoplabel Stones Throw, bekend van J Dilla, Madlib en Mayer Hawthorne. Wie goed luistert, hoort bovendien een zeer geëngageerd man. Soul was een sterke sociale katalysator tijdens de jaren 70 in de Verenigde Staten. Blacc eert de emancipatorische kracht van Motown en trekt de lijn verder. (Rock Werchter 2011)
